How can I reach Coimbra from Lisbon or Porto? Are there any buses or train?!

We’ll divide this topic into 2 sections - A for Lisbon and B for Porto!

A) When you arrive to the Lisbon Airport you’ll have 2 options:

● You either go to the nearest train station (“Lisboa Oriente”) by catching the metro’s red line and leaving 3 stations later in “Lisboa Oriente” and climbing to the top floor.

● Or you can also go to the bus station in Lisboa Oriente’s ground floor, or to the bus station in “Sete Rios”, which has more options, by catching the metro’s red line and later changing to the blue line in “São Sebastião”, and then leaving in “Jardim Zoológico”, if you ask around you’ll easily find the bus depot in “Sete Rios”.

There are trains and buses until very late hours, so don’t worry about your arrival. We’ll leave the links to the websites where you can buy your tickets and see your schedules:

● Train: https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/pt  From: Lisboa-Oriente // To: Coimbra-B.

● Bus: https://www.rede-expressos.pt/ From: Lisboa Oriente OR Lisboa Sete Rios // To: Coimbra.

The bus is usually cheaper but it takes longer.

How do I move around in Coimbra?

Despite its ups and downs, you can walk pretty much anywhere in Coimbra. For longer journeys, however, we recommend you use the city’s yellow buses “SMTUC”. The buses are organized in numbers and each number has a defined route.

The cheapest way to travel in this network is to purchase a yellow multiuse card (0,50€) in SMTUC stores and recharge it there, whenever you need it.

You can check the buses’ schedules and their routes in the following website:

http://www.smtuc.pt/ . We recommend the “Moovit” app to easily figure out which buses to take anywhere you want.

What should I take with me to Coimbra?

You should bring your European Health Insurance Card https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=559 , all of your identification cards or passport, tickets and, to those who need them, invitation letters and visas. Make sure to bring your lab coat.
