Literature as Memory: Fiction and the Great War in Africa

Since 1916, various literary works have been published on the Great War or First World War in Africa. Whilst most are in English, there are known publications in Portuguese, German, Danish, Polish and French. The genres include novels, poetry, short stories and scripts, both drama and film, with authors both male and female. This compilation seeks to explore the role of literature in reflecting and perpetuating the memory of the 1914-1918 war in Africa.

If you would like to contribute on the topic, please get in touch with the editors, Sérgio Neto and Anne Samson, before 31 May 2023 stating your intended focus, accompanied with a short biography.

Contributions can be country or language specific covering a single or various genres, or thematic in terms of genre and/or content and focus. It can also be a detailed look at a particular text/form. Our aim is to be as inclusive as possible. Regardless of approach, the main thesis of the contribution must focus on the role literature has made to keeping the memory of the Great War in Africa alive (or not).

Contributors can be from any related field, including journalists and fiction writers who have written about the First World War in Africa. The process, challenges and motivations, of creating memory is as valuable as analysing and evaluating trends and content.

Contributions are to be between 5,000 and 10,000 words in length, including references, and can be submitted in the language of your choice. The intention, depending on the number of contributions accepted, is to publish in both the submitted language and English.

Further details will be supplied on request.

The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2024.

The compilation will be published in paperback by the Great War in Africa Association.
