"Africa in the Jornal da Europa" is the most recent article published in book form by CEIS20 researcher Sérgio Neto, and is part of the work Creating and Opposing Empire. The Role of the Colonial Periodical Press, by Routledge.

This article aims to analyse the Jornal da Europa, which, during the final years of the First Republic and the Military Dictatorship, sought to combine colonial propaganda and information, with special emphasis on culture. Its second phase, which started at the end of 1926, was even more assertive, with a multiplication of articles on travel impressions, as well as short essays and poems, in an attempt to seduce potential colonists to take the road to Africa. In this sense, it preceded the colonial propaganda magazine O Mundo Português (The Portuguese World), which came into being in the 1930s and 1940s, already under the auspices of the Estado Novo.
