MemoMarranos – Document mapping of the "marranos" in the 20th century

The project "MemoMarranos" (2021-2022) is part of a process of consolidation of an international network of researchers and institutions that produce and disseminate knowledge about Jews, "marranos", antisemitism and the Holocaust.

This project, which obtained 34 thousand euros of funding, intends to identify relevant documentation for the production and dissemination of further scientific knowledge about the evolution, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day - with emphasis on the 1930s and the Holocaust period - of Portuguese people classified as "marranos".

The "Marranos" would be Portuguese citizens, also descendents of the Portuguese "Jews" (until 1496) and of the "New Christians" (16th to 18th centuries), who would have lost contact with the essential of the Sephardic culture and with the other segments of the Jewish Diaspora. They would have lived, at least until immediately after the Second World War, mainly in the central and northern interior of mainland Portugal.

Thus, the "MemoMarranos" results from the importance of enabling, both a better knowledge about this segment of the Portuguese reality, and the comparison of its evolution with other segments of the Jewish Diaspora and with other universes of post-victims of mass violence. The aim is to identify and characterise the relevant documentation - oral (memory and post-memory), written (manuscript and printed), graphic, audiovisual and material.
